Besides the fact that this is less costly that putting children in jail along side adults, it would give hope to many troubled young people that if they endure their hardships, and stay out of as much trouble as possible, that they can emerge as successful Americans. When children are put into jail and detention centers alongside adults, their lives are basically over. They receive no scholarly education since "in a juvenile facility, you"re required to attend school; in an adult prison, you"re not." (Talbot 7) Therefore no one actually gets their G.E.D. Instead they are educated by experienced, violent adult offenders in the cruel practices of prison life. When they get out of jail they often will have no education beyond the eighth grade level, no job skills, no friends their age, and no social experience of unincarcerated life after the age of fourteen or fifteen. They will have trouble even getting low skilled jobs because of their felony records, which could not be expunged, since they were prosecuted as an adult. They have all these great things going for them, and are still young enough to commit many more crimes. Furthermore a child being injected into a prison population cannot be good for that kid's physical or mental health. "In general, young prisoners are more vulnerable than adults to sexual exploitation and physical brutality. They are more likely than older inmates to commit suicide. They are more likely than young people in juvenile detention facilities to be physically assaulted and to return to a life of crime when they are set free." (Talbot 9) .
Criminals, no matter how old they are, need to be punished when they commit violent crimes. A strong message, that clearly defines the punishment and consequences to violent and crude actions, needs to be sent to potential offenders regardless of their current age or maturity. The juvenile justice system, that in "the past has generally concentrated more on the prevention of crime and the rehabilitation of delinquent teens"(Current Issues 75), was created to deal with theft, truancy, and vandalism.
