Flaws of the Drinking Laws

Alcohol is a drug, and it is one of the most commonly used ones throughout history. Thousands of years ago Egyptians were drinking wine at banquets and at dinner. The Greeks and Romans would use it to celebrate their gods and goddesses. Beer was always easy to find at your local tavern in England. It has been used for social gatherings for millennia. This is partially because it relaxes people and eases the tongue. Alcohol will lower inhibitions and can make you forget some of the minor details of a rough day. The problem is that it has been abused for centuries as well. In this new age drinking has become a very dangerous threat. This is not so much because of how it can make people act in violent or irrational manners; rather, it is because of how it impairs our ability to think clearly and quickly. Thinking clearly and quickly is of paramount importance when behind the wheel of a three-ton chunk of metal moving at speeds of sixty miles per hour. This great danger sparked the creation of a new set of state laws, which is mostly identical in all fifty states. While I agree that these laws have great intentions, I believe there are a few modifications that would make things more reasonable for everyone. Having a drinking age of 18 would make a good deal more sense.
The presidential election of 2000 was the first time that I, at almost nineteen years of age, was old enough to vote. When given the opportunity, the country was trusting me to make the decision based on how I felt about the candidate's views. I was trusted to not make an uninformed decision, and my vote had the potential to change the country. My being here in Florida during this election year made this point even truer. I could have altered the way 300 million people were going to live the next four years of their life with my one vote. It did not even matter that I was not forced to learn anything about politics or which candidate stood for what.
