THE COMPARISON AND CONTRAST OF "THE DESTRUCTORS".
There are many similarities and difference between the two stories, "The Destructors" and "The Rocking-Horse Winner", written by Graham Greene and D.H. Lawrence, respectively. In analyzing the two stories, the following will be compared and contrasted: both authors" choices of characters, themes, and conclusions .
In both tales, the characters often are alike and at other times, it is obvious that they are different. For instance, in the area of being alike, Paul wants to accomplish one goal, that is to finally become lucky, and this translates into becoming rich. Trevor, along with the other gang members in "The Destructors", also has a main goal to accomplish and that is to be the first gang to destroy a home. Both characters have a drive to complete their goal. The characters are different in one importance aspect: Paul in "The Rocking-Horse Winner" has a desire to become lucky, which means winning the ultimate cash prize in a horse race. Paul's intention in wining the horse race is to help his mother financially, not himself. Paul was unselfish in his goal. On the other hand, Trevor, in "The Destructors" wants to prove to himself that he can destroy a house and to receive praise, for demolishing someone else's property. This praise, from the other more established gangs, would make Trevor famous. Paul's only desire was to help another, and Trevor wanted to help himself.
In "The Destructors", the main theme deals with a street gang who has to complete its goal of destroying the home of Mr. Thomas, who is often called "Old Misery". In the "Rocking-Horse Winner", the theme centers on a young boy, Paul, who is obsessed with horseracing. Initially both stories seem to have no relationship in their plot or story line, but there are places where they are similar and other places where they are dissimilar. For example, both stories occur in post war England.
