Flirting

Explain the techniques the Director John Duigan uses to establish the time, place and Danny's character in "Flirting".
The film "Flirting", directed by John Duigan and produced by Kennedy Miller Productions and was released on 21 March 1991. The different types of techniques contributed to this film was by the Sound Department, the Director of Photography, the Director and the Producer who helped to express all the elements to make this film effective in its topic.
As the first scene emerges, I could see that this was the early morning, the sky formed a dark navy colour that blended into the night. I could hear the buzzing and chirping sounds of crickets as they moved around in the early morning of the night. These sounds helped create the rural sound of the outback. The first scene gives us a detailed outlook of the external construction of an old fashion building. This shot takes it's place outside the building gate and sits there for a few seconds creating a still shot. This gives the viewer time to take a closer look into the building before the shot drawn us closer to the building, this motion is been created by "tracking", this "tracking" motion gives us the feeling of a new student entering the school building for the very first time.
The scenery for this first scene was set at night; this is to create a frightening thought for the audience. This scene creates a sense similar to the beginning of a horror film. As the scene takes us further towards the building, the Narrator "Danny" enters the scene via a "voice over". He starts the story by saying "I can remember the smelt most", this instantly tells the viewer that the Narrator is drawing us back into his past, of the incidents that occurred to him. As Danny continued his narration, a sudden whipping sound enters the screen, breaking over the sounds of the night. A "camera flash" did the visualisation for the whipping sound, each time that the whip would strike; the camera flash would immediate follow the sound.
