This unique talent of Sezen's may not be apparent on a quick, first hearing. In our world even love is a consumer product, so it may be necessary to delve a little deeper into Sezen's voice to get in touch with those feelings that are part of the great oral tradition of the lands where she belongs. Sezen's voice, pure and compassionate, invites us all to love, and to share the powerful Mediterranean sensitivity and vibrant Balkan colors that merge in this cultural mosaic.
Born with the surname Yildirim in Saraykoy in the province of Denizli, Turkey. Her parents, both teachers moved to Izmir when Sezen was three years old. Throughout her childhood Sezen was fascinated in all aspects of art. Although she chose the Agricultural Faculty for her higher education, she took painting, drama and dance lessons at the same time. She also joined the Izmir Arts Association where she had lessons from Izmir Radio on Turkish Music and Art. .
By this time Sezen has now been working in the area of Turkish popular music since 1975, and has written more than 450 songs. Sezen, known as the "Sound of Love", had been pushing at the boundaries of love by getting married five times. At the moment she is working on her sixth marriage and her 17th album that is due summer 2002. .
Sezen's music is on the poetic and sentimental side that is typical of Mediterranean cultural traditions. That is why she is regarded a poet as well, in addition to being a superb singer. Most of the songs are based on her words, and those are old words aptly applied to the contemporary dilemmas faced and felt. Those are very ambitious, even religious words. It is as though she is a woman contender for prophecy, which explains the word ambitious. Although this leaves room for cynicism, especially among her competitors, in all fairness, the songs based on her poems have less ambitious verbal content. Rather, the words, while depicting cultural and universal moral sentiments, are applied to the modern situations.
