Abigail and the other girls were the cause of the excessive carnage. They took advantage of the many weaknesses that riddled Salem's society. They used the "word of God" to point out the "evil" in Salem and fooled everyone in the process.
Salem was home to a strict Christian religion call Puritan. Everyone is Salem was forced to give just about all forms of entertainment. The lifestyle they lived was full of work and prayer. If anyone had even the slightest of falters in the rules of this society the entire town would shun them. The religion also suggests that the people must be very aware of the devil's tricks. This tension really adds to the acceptability of Abigail's outlandish story.
Abigail and the other girls realized they could us the town gullibility to gain power. They only needed to put on an act like they were being attacked or they saw then with the devil. This would be good enough evidence to get the person they wished to rid themselves of arrested. They Judges and other people of power in the town totally ignored solid evidence. This allowed only word to be necessary to accuse someone.
The judicial system of Salem was a joke. It was almost completely against the defendant. In this system the judge served two roles. He was the judge of course, and the prosecutor. Even if the Judge was proven wrong you might still be convicted. This is due to resentment and failure to listen to the facts. Since the defense didn't have equal power it was often a futile effort.
Salem in all its weaknesses breaded this disastrous event. The religion allowed people to take sick enjoyment that prevented people from stopping the scandal. The way people were accused required very little evidence.
