Power

Power on its surface seems to take on a "will of the majority" approach. It is evident throughout time that the power to control has not always been the majority or even represented by the majority. Plato wrote of a "ruling class", he did not mention that it be elected, rather he stated that it should be formed and maintained. Many societies in history have turned to a monarchy form of government. This puts all the power into one person and when that person passed on, the power stayed within the family. It can be deduced that the people of theses societies believed their leaders had an aura of control because they were gifted or even touched by God to be the authority. People seem to look to power and want to know where it is, and when they find it they seem to exemplify it. They create a physical entity that is so strong in their beliefs that they are willing to do anything for it, whether it is wrong or right. This is notable in military action. A person may worship a god and by worshipping they agree to a set of standards laid out by that god. These standards may be to not worship any other god, to not kill other people or commit other atrocities that may upset the harmony of the world. Yet, in the name of their country, men and women will take arms and kill others as a display of their state's power over a weaker place. Some will take up arms knowing they will die in order to defend the honor of their country, even though it is quite evident that they are weaker. Humans tend to accept the power that is over them rather easily and seem to do what that power asks of them without hesitation. People are aware of the knowingly real power they can see physically. Even though their faith may be strong, they will still submit to a physical presence. Often times they submit out of fear for their own lives. The people of the former Soviet Union and those under Hitler's Germany knew that some of the acts committed by their government was wrong, but yet they submitted to these governments because the government had the power to destroy them.
