Coming of Age in Mississippi

In this essay I will explore the many events in Anne Moody's life from her childhood to her participation in the Civil Rights Movement. I will also discuss why she possibly came to the conclusion that she did and what could have changed it as well as my interpretation of the ending comment.
During Anne's childhood she had several after school jobs. These jobs that she took were always for white women and for very low pay. For her first job she received seventy-five cents and two gallons of milk a week. .
While she worked the many odd jobs she had observed many things about white people, but didn't quite understand what the secret was to being white. She was always interested in what made blacks different from whites. She had noticed that whites always eat better than her family. She felt that one secret she learned was that white women were lazy which is why they have black women working for them.
Anne and her siblings had also developed a friendship with some white children. This was the first time they had ever had other children to play with. When their family went to the movies blacks always had to sit in the upper balcony while the whites could sit downstairs. Anne's mother explained that they just weren't allowed to sit downstairs and couldn't do things with other white children. Anne noted that up until her mother told her this she had never thought about the difference between the colors and still didn't understand what made them so different.
During Anne's childhood she learned that there was a difference between those with black skin and those with white. She was never able to get an answer. When she would ask her mother about it she would become angry with Anne. She even thought the secret was in their "privates" and examined that aspect and found nothing that would clue her in. She thought maybe it was their straight hair or light skin that made them different. She still never understood the reason why the colors of skin made people different.
