Cinderella

She isn't even allowed to have a bed of her own; instead she is made to sleep in the fireplace. Because of this she is always dirty, and no longer a pretty little girl. .
On the other hand, in the Native American version, Oochigeaskw has no stepfamily. Her father is a widower and has three daughters who all live together. Oochigeaskw is the youngest and is small, delicate, and often sick. One of the sisters, the eldest, treats Oochigeaskw dreadfully. " the wicked sister would burn her hands and feet with hot cinders, and she was covered with scars from this treatment"(214). When her father asks what happened to her, the older sister just makes up excuses about how Oochigeaskw fell into the fire because she had disobeyed her father's orders. Oochigeaskw's other sister is nicer to her and sometimes takes her side when the older sister is picking on her. Though both families in each story are evil, it is quite obvious that the dynamics of each family are completely different. .
Another obvious difference in the two stories is the settings. In the Grimm's version there is a kingdom whose king calls for a celebration that will last for three days. All of the beautiful young women of the kingdom are asked to attend. The purpose of the party is so that the prince might find someone he could call his bride. The stepsisters knew they were asked to attend and when Aschenputtel asked if she could also come, they just laugh at her. ""What, you Aschenputtel!" she said, "in all your dust and dirt, you want to go to the festival! You that have no dress and no shoes! You want to dance!""(210). In the Native American version, there is no party, no king, and no prince. The story takes place in a large village of the MicMac Indians. The "prince" in this story is a young man who cannot be seen by anyone but his sister and the one woman who is meant to be his bride. " everyone knew that any girl who could see him might marry him.
