Bravery

556-557] And even the great tactician Odysseus hesitates before continuing into a badly matched fight: "A disgraceful thing if I should break and run, fearing their main force-but it's far worse if I"m taken alone." [Book XI. 478-480] Though Odysseus ultimately chooses to risk death by continuing to fight, it is important to note that he considered his options as opposed to plunging recklessly into battle against greater numbers.
Even postmortem it is still possible to spite the enemy via the desecration of the foe's body. When the effort made to recover bodies during battle is considered, the importance placed on proper burial becomes clear. Not being properly buried tarnishes your memory. The taunts to a fallen enemy of: " you"ll glut the dogs and birds of Troy with your fat and flesh- [Book XIII. 961-962] abound throughout the text. The value placed proper burial is further made evident when considering the pains and risks Priam makes to retrieve the body of the fallen Hector from the abusive clutches of Achilles. This reveals an advantage of courageousness; even if a soldier perishes after fighting bravely, his comrades will make an effort to save the body: " Death in its rampage outraced you-no escape Now your father and noble mother / will never close your eyes in death - screaming vultures will claw them out of you, wings beating your corpse! But I, if I should die, my comrades-in-arms will bury me in style!" [Book XI. 531-536].
Having established that death is to be avoided at all costs, it should be clear that one life to live is all a warrior has. So does courage always necessitate fighting? Is it impossible to live the life of a brave man without slaughtering countless foes? Perhaps, but it is not the place of The Iliad to address this, nor is it the place of the Greek soldier to question the war. A god-fearing man will follow the will of the gods. Therefore, if fighting is decreed or inspired by the will or actions of Zeus or some other god, then it becomes the responsibility of the soldier to fight the good fight as best he can.
