Society has constantly evolved throughout history. That has never been more evident than in the past fifty years. Adult relationships have changed dramatically, with couples living together, interracial marriages, and gay and lesbian couples choosing to live their lives in the open, rather than hiding their relationship. Today the entire concept of marriage is different. Couples no longer choose to marry because they want children. The woman in the relationship has a completely different lifestyle than the women in the past. Most women are not in the shadows of their husband but are their equal partners. As these changes take place, more and more homosexual couples want to be a part of that society. Some argue that same sex marriages are morally wrong; however, it is even more immoral to deny them the same rights as heterosexual couples.
At this time there are no states that legally allow homosexuals to marry. Several states have tried to pass bills to legalize same sex marriages but all have failed. Based on the fear that some religious organizations have of these laws passing, the federal government in 1996 passed the Defense of Marriage Act. According to Chuck Stewart in his book Contemporary Legal Issues Homosexuality and the Law this act "established the union of one male and one female as the legal definition of marriage with respect to federal laws and programs, and specified that states could legally ignore same-sex marriages performed in other states" (179). .
Conservative and religious organizations have listed several arguments to suggest that same sex marriages are bad for society. The religious organizations claim that the Bible states it is morally wrong to engage in same sex relationships. In an article in Insight On the News Paula Ettlebrick and Don Feder state that the organizations against same sex marriage argue, "same-sex civil unions amount to one more step in the unmaking of civilization.
