Anorexia

If I control my need for food, I can control my need for love." (132 Chin). It has been proven in cases that parents who are controlling cause their children to grasp one thing they can control, what they eat, thus leading to an eating disorder. Many families that stress achievement or teenagers that feel need for attention resort to these disorders.
The desires for perfection or approval are other psychological causes along with a possible genetic link. Recent studies also show that vital infections are linked to causing anorexia in some patients. Athletes are also affected quite frequently by this disorder because of their need to stay in shape, and remain a healthy weight.
The media is also a major influence on society and the desire to be thin. The appealing look of thinness and the popularity it brings make many people resort to starving themselves. These days the media relates beauty, success, and happiness to being thin. Not only do they make thin appealing but they also make fun of actors or actresses that are not the ideal weight. "Many people hold negative stereotypes about obesity and prejudice against women who are overweight." (73 Thompson) If the media were to focus on average bodies skinny would be less desirable and eating disorders would be less common.
The physical causes of this disease are starting with an innocent diet and encouragement from others. Success and praise from loosing weight drives it to become a life goal. Five or ten pounds seem not enough, loss becomes an achievement and gain becomes a failure. Many exercise obsessively to loose weight, thus becoming hyperactive. The fear of gaining weight takes over their life and consumes their thoughts. The ability to see their body as what it really is becomes impossible. The anorexic see themselves as fat and suffer severely from denial. The rationalization is I feel fat, I look fat, and therefore I must be fat and must loose weight.
