Literature and the study of literature are irrelevant luxuries in today's world.
I was running through those old ruins, uphill and downhill. I could feel the damply breath of my friend Julius close behind me. Where should we run to? Where was the end of that goddamn tunnel. I thought we would never see the daylight again and escape from our followers. There it was! I could see the brightly illuminated exit right in front of me. One second later, a giant hand tried to grip me. I started screaming because at that moment I wasn't able to run anymore, my feet bogged down. "Anne, George, Richard, Julius and Tim, help me!" Instead of Anne, George, Richard, Julius or Tim, I heard the voice of my mother, who was calling my name:.
"Saaaaskiaaaa, dinner's ready." Damn! The story was so thrilling at that moment and I was totally involved in the most important scene of my favourite book: "Five on Finniston Farm". Now I had to stop reading for such unimportant things like eating, while my friends were in danger .
Scenes like that are repetitive in my life. I"m a glutton for books. For me it's fascinating to slip into other persons and to put myself in another places. I have recognized, that for many people, reading is an irrelevant luxury in today's world. My aim is, to analyse why this attitude is so common, because literature and the study of literature does always mean a profit to the reader.
First and most important is, to find out imaginable reasons for the irrelevance of reading in today's society. One reason might be, that there exists a large number of other - apparently more modern - offered leisure-time activities. In the second place, it takes the reader time to get involved into the story and simply that fact seems to be for many people a not conquerable obstacle. A lot of people don't even have time for that. They are so busy with other work or leisure-time activities that simply time is missing.
