Suddenly the fog is pierced with a sound of a baby crying in the background; then, a beat drops. The baby represents the beginning, the start of the group, but more importantly the start of the fight of the African American man. It is obvious through Q-tips words that the Tribe believes that African males have been put in their place, degraded by society. They examine the ways black men are portrayed with stereotypically clichés like " Comin' off the days where we used to wear the tans and a blue-collar talker, a hemisphere stalker."" If they perceive themselves as more prominent members of society from times when the black man was seen only as the " blue collar- working man, they see themselves moving forward from an oppressed beginning to a triumphant reign. It is important to note that although they see themselves as being oppress!.
ed in the beginning, a theme that arises throughout the piece is the enormous amount of pride in being " what I am, that's a tribal man."" The words express the pride felt in being a success. This success, which includes the achievements of the group, the trials endured by black men, and the barriers destroyed by the African American society as a whole, is hereby being recognized through the rhetoric of the rapper's poetry. .
The verse ends with Q-Tip stating, "As we start our travels, things they will unravel, Que sera sera', for this unit is like gravel."" The Tribe is comparing their strength to a rock. Metaphorically stating they are immovable. Furthermore they express the belief that they won't be influenced by outside forces like the media or the public. The Tribe is not the only group that compares their strength to that of a rock.
