What is spiritually? I define spirituality as something that is not seen but is experienced supernaturally. In our text, Zastrow and Kirt-Ashman cite, we have defined spirituality as " the view and behaviors that express a sense of relatedness to something greater than self" (Beckett & Johnson, 1995, p. 1393). I personally believe in God and his son Jesus. They are greater than I. Martha Beck had many spiritual and supernatural experiences. For example, Beck explains her supernaturally experience she had during the fire. Beck .
describes the feeling of the neighbor lady's hand on her, yet it was bigger (pg 91). "I felt the man's arm slide by me, between my back and the wall, and he yanked me upward, hard to my feet (pg 91). She goes on to say that it would be best if they (her family) could saved money when she and Katie both died in the fire. The out of nowhere a voice said "Three". This baffled her because she could not see anyone. Yet, there were three, Her Katie and Adam. .
Our text further states that spirituality is often manifested in the form of religion (Canda, 1989). I agree to a certain degree. I think religion is something that we practice daily. For example, most people eat at least once a day, even if they do not brush their teeth after each meal. Therefore, I can safely say that eating is a religion. Spirituality or miracles I do not believe happen to everyone everyday. Beck explains that many religious people always seem to have a simple formula to explain why some people get help from angels and some get lobotomized by flying debris from freak wheat-threshing accidents (pg 98). If you join the right church you will live long and prosper; if you leave it you are cosigned to eternal misery (pg 98). I think this school of thought is more of a cultic or bondage type of teaching where as with spirituality one is free. Otterbein and Otterbein (1973) stats,". believe in the Christian deity, and believe that God helps people; a few believe that God hurts or punishes as much as he helps".
