Popular Culture and Schooling

Whereas in a classroom, one may ask a teacher questions, one can ask nothing of a television screen." (Nelson 2002, pg 68). In turn, television presents a curriculum, it teaches us how to act how to discriminate and how to present ones-self. .
Recently television has been introduced into the class- room as a learning tool. Channel one, is a television show created by Christopher Whittle that is currently in over three hundred and fifty thousand class rooms across North America. The program consist of ten to twelve minutes of news and world issues, and two minutes of commercials designed to promote corporate America. This is a prime example of the connection that exists between popular culture and schooling.
Going into high school the majority of high-school aged students will say that they are worried about not being popular or not being accepted. "Teenagers, as is the case with all of us, like positive attention paid to them and to be treated as if they mattered". (Nelsen 2002, pg 77) The three areas of most concern for students entering high school are friends, academics and athletics. With status in these areas one is sure to be popular as is the case in society too.
Friendship is necessary for success in high - school. Friends can be used to reassure one-self that they are part of a group and it gives people the feeling of belonging. "Whenever I felt sad or mad about something I always thought, well at least I have my friends."(Nelsen 2002, pg 80) In society we are constantly building relationships and we are always being subjected to new people, this is no different in school. Sometimes academics can be overshadowed by the constant struggle to meet new people and make new friends.
The main objective behind school is to be successful academically. This is also a quality that is looked highly upon in the "popular culture". With academic success comes great rewards, including wealth, and status.
