Everyone needs someone to look after and care for, to love and protect him. Whether it's family members or friends, love and protection are the basic needs of life. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men , two opposite minded men travel together, care for and understand each other. Even though sometimes conflicts may evolve, no matter what happens, they still have one another. The main thesis presented in this novel is friendship, loneliness, and responsibility. .
Friendship is represented in the book as the relationship between George and Lennie. George and Lennie are not related and yet they`re close like brothers. For example: When Lennie touched the girl's dress back in Weed( where they used to work) they had to run away. Even though George did nothing wrong and didn't need to run away, he ran away with Lennie. This proves that friendship is present because even though George and Lennie are not related to each other, they still help one another. .
The second evidence for friendship is the end of the book, when Lennie made another big mistake. This mistake has caused him to be dead. Lennie was no where to be found, so everyone who worked in the farm went looking for him. The truth was, George was the one that killed Lennie at the end, and it was because of friendship. George wanted to be the one that killed Lennie because he didn't want a stranger to kill him.
Loneliness is presented throughout the book. Candy, the old man, is lonely in the book. He is lonely because his dog was killed by Carlton. The dog was killed for he was too old and too smelly and no good for himself and the others. While later on, he expresses loneliness through the way he talks and the way he acts.
Anotherevidence why Loneliness is a part of this essay is because of Curly's wife. Curly's wife's dream was to become a super model and live a wealthy life at Hollywood. But her chance was missed and so she marries Curly.
