Paying College Athletes

With paying players there would no longer be educational institutions, but major or minor league professional environments. There is a very small percentage of college athletes who play professionally, so colleges should not be regarded by cynics as the farm systems for the NFL or NBA (dickey 2). The point is we've gotten away from what collegiate sports is all about. It is not minor leagues or places for athletes to make money playing a game, but it is about passion and love for something that later may enrich them. .
In addition to eliminating amateurism in college sports, paying college athletes would take way from the value of free educations. Most athletes who are on "full-ride" scholarships have all the basics covered for school, which include tuition, books, and room and board (Greenlee 63). This is why the demand from college athletes to get additional monthly stipends of hundreds of dollars is ludicrous. College athletes are allowed to take any class they wish, pursue any degree, for which there is no charge. They are usually provided tutors and study aides, along with the finest medical care and the best food the campus has to offer. Many football players, for example, shouldn't even be in college because they"re marginal students getting a free chance at an education and using its as a opportunity to go to the NFL (Hayes 60). Yet there are still people who believe college athletes are getting a raw deal. Athletes, especially from poor backgrounds, need a way to get spending money, and that is by allowing part-time jobs. But suggesting that athletes are exploited by schools that give them a free education is insane because the value of an education is priceless. .
Along with the value of a collegiate education being downplayed as insignificant, most of the sports that the NCAA operates do not produce substantial revenue for their schools. Football and men's basketball are the exceptions.
