Jean Louis Papineau

The French Canadians of Lower Canada are a proud people. They endured the hardships of beginning a new life on a new land. After surviving cold winters and other foreign threats they faced an all too familiar foe. The English, their nemesis throughout the ages in Europe, followed them to New France and subjugated them under English rule. Even though the French outnumbered the English in Lower Canada, the English dominated the political and economic spectrums. It was evident that when the fragile economy of the region prospered, the friction between the two groups diminished. However this was uncommon in the early 1800's. With agricultural hardships and poverty prevailing, French Canadians became increasingly desperate. Dependency on others for prosperity caused much frustration. This desperation by the population prompted the rise of a leader that masterfully seized the moment. Before long, Louis-Joseph Papineau had created a party to represent the French people. Le Parti Canadien as it was first called was created to unite and thus give a powerful political voice to the French Canadians of Lower Canada. Unfortunately it did not serve the needs of the people it drew its support from. Due to the pre-dominantly middle class leadership that was not representative of the French Canadian population, Papineau's goals and the means he and his party used to achieve their goals, did not serve the interests of the French Canadians. .
Lower Canada's population was growing in the beginning of the 19th Century at an alarming rate . The number of professionals swelled without an increase in job opportunities. Thus politics became the only outlet for their ambitions . The educated class was aware of French Canada's colonial state. The need to increase economic and political representation was recognized by the professional class. By associating the interest of the rest of French Canadians with those of their own classes, the support for a French Canadian Nation' was abundant.
