             • Supporting the French- France wanted to take power back and the US backs France b/c he is communist. And the US comes to provide supplies along with military and financial aid. 80% of stuff in Vietnam. The French try to lure him into attack and destroy him forever. .
            
             • Dien Bien Phu- The French forces are almost completely wiped out. The French are out. What to do next. .
            
             • The Geneva Convention- 1954- America had a dilemma, french out so have to decide what to do french agree to this geneva HO agreed hat the country would temporality. be divided at the parallel, then in 1956 two yrs after the convention there would be a nat. election to decided who would rule over a united Vietnam. They decide to place a man there to win. Ngo Dinh Diem.
             THE DIEM REGIME 1954-1963.
            
             • Problems for Ngo Dinh Diem- they do not let the election take place in South Vietnam, he does not est. a good party there.
            
             • Corruption and religious persecution- He put a lot of his own family members into power in the new govt. they seek their own benefit. This causes a lot of corruption. He was a Catholic, most of the country was Buddhist and Diem liked to crack down on Buddhist. Muslims might have burned themselves. .
            
             • Natl. Liberation Front- or Viet Cong, these are people against Diem and support Ho. .
            
             • Assassination of Diem (1963)- The supporters of Diem begin to plan to kill him. They told Kennedy about getting rid of him he said ok, and they killed him and some of his family, Kennedy did not know they were going to kill him. It creates a revolving door of govt. which is leaders trying to be in power that all get revolted against. .
             LBJ AND ESCALATION- takes place of Kennedy he wants to do something. .
            
             • TONKIN Gulf Resolution (1964)- after this LBJ gets to do whatever he wants.
