War

O"Brien just did not like war after his horrible experiences in war. .
The bloodshed of war was also a key factor that O"Brien wrote about. A example of this is its "A authentic and bloody detail that he knows so well from the war that he barley made it out of, where a educated young man is drafted and shipped over seas to combat and fight the Vietcong"(Gunton p.357). This quote shows his experiences, and how he sent into war right out of school. From those memories he choose to write the book. O" Brien explains how "he wanted to write a book where craving for love can make us do really horrible things that he choose to write about Vietnam. He was giving back what he was given" (Magil). He wanted to write a book truly showed what actually happened in war. His writings were directly from his memories and showing exactly what he knew. Another example of this is " Christ, do you know where we are bound? We are Nam-bound, Warsville, understand? Death City (O"Brien 192). He knew what could happen there in war and was starting to panic; he could die at anytime at any place with the so-called "evil" Vietcong everywhere. He knew what could and would happen there in Vietnam and was recalling what had happened. The bloodshed of war was only part of it.
The fact of fighting in a war he knew was wrong also led to his anti war sentiments. An example of this is "He expressed feelings of conflict morally reprehensible and emotionally unacceptable, he considered Canada or Jail but finally would have chose flight or incarceration over Vietnam" (Brykorski, Dedria 24). O" Brien would have done anything to get out of that war. He truly hated the fact of war at that point. For him anything would have been better then going into war. Since O"Brien discarded his conviction, " He nevertheless has suffered from an ineradicable sense of guilt and responsibility"(Gram 442). This means that he did serve in the war, but only because he had to.
