             1) The author of this article states that the years an individual participates in traditional education are far too important to be spent memorizing irrelevant information in a herd-like fashion under strict rule. The author wrestles with different arguments that support his particular view. First, he talks about how there should be a change from an increase in schooling to less schooling altogether; he talks about how schools are now cutting into summer vacation by assigning the compulsory reading of novels. The article states that these assignments are discouraging children from reading novels on their own. The second argument comes about with the author discussing how our current educational system interferes with love relationships and personal maturity growth. He states that there is a fixation of college instilled upon students by their parents and teachers from an early age. This directly results in the notion of a credentialized society similar to the author's poor experience of trading in an early love relationship for a series of degrees. .
The supporting arguments that I selected from the article are ones that I felt were thought provoking and interesting. I do agree in the author's notion of lessening the amount of time spent in school. I think this would help motivate students to focus more on their personal learning experience rather than dreading it everyday. I also agree that schools should not impose reading assignments on students during their vacation or free time. I think that the key word is "free", in the sense that students should be free to do as they wish during their summer break. These types of compulsory reading assignments are discouraging children from reading novels for their own interest. In conclusion, I think that there is obviously some relevance to the author's viewpoints in relation to the modern educational system, although I do not support cutting educational time in half in the sense that this will enable more people to have a greater desire to peruse freedom of thought in their education.
