I am strongly against school uniforms. Some people feel school uniforms will eliminate behavior problems, reduce stress put on by classmates, and enhance student learning. I disagree with these opinions. In fact, I believe school uniforms can have adverse affects on students. .
First, school uniforms stifle individuality. Should we not appreciate each other's differences in skin colour, hair fashions, ethnic backgrounds, and clothing? Wearing a school uniform is telling everyone to conform to one way. School uniforms discourages one's unique clothing style.
Secondly, people that support school uniforms think it would be more economical to buy a school uniform, rather than purchasing a variety of clothes. I disagree. School uniforms themselves can be very costly and then you still have to buy clothes for after school hours, and holidays. Indeed, school uniforms are not cost effective.
Some people suggest school uniforms will reduce discipline problems. There are many other ways to handle discipline problems without turning our public schools into institutions. Getting to the route of the behavior problem is the answer, not school uniforms.
Supporters of school uniforms feel that children that don't fit in, will do so, if everyone wears the same clothes. I disagree. It is not what we wear that determines fitting in. It is how we act and how we treat each other that forms friendships. It's appreciating each other's differences and tolerating each other's quirks that is essential, not identical clothing.
As well, school uniforms can be restricting to daily activities. For example, there are days when you need to wear you"re grubs because you"re going off campus to plant seedlings along riverbank. Wearing a school uniform would certainly suit this type of outdoor hands-on activity. .
Finally, school uniforms in the public school system violate human rights. For this reason alone, the debate over school uniforms should not even exist.
