Apartheid: Extreme Raceism

In 1948, the first of these laws began to pass including the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act, and various other decrees which designated certain jobs, those that provided for higher incomes, for whites only. The prohibition of mixed marriages simply set a precedent that whites were not supposed to associate with the Black Natives. However, when certain jobs suddenly became unavailable to the blacks, many people were rendered unemployed, and the socioeconomic status of the majority plummeted to an unimaginable low. .
The Population Registration Act of 1950 further segregated the population as three racial categories were outlined: white, black, and colored. These divisions were made based mainly on appearance, but social acceptance and descent were also taken into account. If a child had any trace of blackness to him or her, then they were automatically classified as black. However, some colored people who were accepted by society and who looked white could be considered white. The colored included groups such as Asians and Indians.
Resembling the American Indian Reservations or the Jewish Ghettos, the Bantu Authorities Act of 1951 assigned all blacks to a homeland. These Bantus were set up along what would be considered the boarder of South Africa. This boarder, however, was not recognized by any other country in the world. Blacks were assigned to live in these areas based on their origins; however, these assignments were usually grossly inaccurate. Families were separated, and feuding tribes were brought together. Fourteen percent of South African land was designated for roughly ten (my sources ranged from 9-10) different Bantustan. Over nine million people were then forced from their homes and made to live in these poorly developed areas. Soon, they would also have to carry passports, which would allow them to pass into South Africa to work or pick up supplies. They had suddenly become aliens to their own land.
