She is comparing the two children and is treating both alike. This is hurting Ruth very much and in spite of everything she is doing to make May proud of her. Ruth internally, is struggling and trying to make her life very protected and wanted in society. To solve Ruth's conflict and to feel that she is doing something with her life she gets a job, after she finishes her school, at the dry cleaning, Trim N Tidy and begins to give May the money she earns. The cause of the conflict between mother and daughter is that she finds her daughter not as smart as Matt. And one day Ruth says:.
"She couldn't help hollering at me sometimes, wringing that .
dish towels, saying, Won't you ever learn to get your tasks right?' .
I always said I didn't know, and she'd tell me she wishes she could .
order me some new brains. She wondered out loud id scientist .
could figure a way to do brain transplants-. (Hamilton 67).
Conflicts between mother and daughter is growing each and every day specially when Ruth is getting married to Ruby who she loves very much. May's jealousy grows when she is seeing her daughter happy for the first time. May's marriage to Elmer is not the same as it was with William, the love of her life. The lost of William in World War II makes May's life very miserable. Considerately that Ruth is Elmer's daughter, is causing May's behaviors ness towards her daughter. This causes jealousy and May is having a hard time seeing Ruth happier than she ever been. The jealousy she feels towards her daughter and son-in-law is making their lives very wretched. The conflict is not only growing towards Ruth but also with Ruby. Ruby is a very sympathetic and loving character who also grows up in a difficult and strenuous life with his parents. When he is grown up and is married to Ruth, his psychological conflicts and laziness makes his life more complicated to get a job and raise his family on his own.
