friendship

3.363-5). When Roderigo starts to assume that he is being used, Iago always uses his love for Desdemona to keep him motivated.
Throughout the first act, hints of a false friendship appear, some more clearly than others. In the opening lines, Roderigo states that Iago controls him: "That thou, Iago were thine," (1.1.2-3) implying that Iago has his money, and he is controlled by strings, as if he were a puppet. But Iago easily sways Roderigo's view of their friendship by telling him he is has gone crazy. Iago and Roderigo's friendship is based on lies and deception which is quite apparent from the first act. Iago discusses how he would never go about controlling his buddy Roderigo into working against the Moor but goes ahead and convinces him into doing so. Later on in the play, once Roderigo has given up and is discouraged by his friend's actions he earns the courage to stand up for himself. Roderigo has received enough strength from his friend's words to equal the value of his land. But at the same time, he has given up all of his land to Iago. As soon as this happens, Iago admits for the first time his true intentions for keeping Roderigo as a friend. He knows he controls Roderigo, and openly states he is using him for his own profit. At this moment, the friendship that had been seen throughout the play crumbles, and poor Roderigo is last to know. .
The relationship Iago and Roderigo share compare greatly to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Cervantes creates a friendship between Don Quixote and his squire, Sancho, by treating the lofty formal relationships of chivalric romances in a low style. As opposed to creating a knight and squire with the official association that is shared, Cervantes writes their relationship as a friendship, with each character's strengths complimenting the others weaknesses.
Although the relationship between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza is of master and slave, it is quite similar to Iago and Roderigo.
