What the Hell was it I Wanted to Buy?: Long Day's Journey In

.
The conversation between Tyrone and Edmund takes a sudden turn for the better with Tyrone's realization that Edmund's time may be limited. Tyrone finally gives up on the light, and instead decides to turn on the chandelier, "Let them burn! The poorhouse is the end of the road, and it might as well be sooner as later! (2058)" This is yet another slip in Tyrone's language that shows his true feelings, not that he wishes for the poorhouse, but for a distinct change from his present existence. Tyrone refuses to leave the mood light for long, "You've got brains in that head of yours, though you do your best to deny them. You"ll live to learn the value of a dollar. You"re not like that damned tramp of a brother. I've given up hope he"ll ever get sense. (2058)" Surprising, Edmund does not respond to foul statements about his older brother, Jamie, telling only of the last time he was seen (2058). This lack of response can only be seen as not disagreeing with Tyrone's statement, but at the same time, he does not see harm in his brother's status as a tramp. Tyrone is unable to let the issue die, stating, "it doesn't take a soothsayer to tell he's probably in the whorehouse. (2058)" Edmund remains complacent, "What of it if he is? Why not? (2058)" This shows Edmund's admiration for his older brother, even when his actions may not be socially acceptable. At this, Tyrone shows only contempt, "Why not, indeed. It's the fit place for him. If he's ever had a loftier dream than whores and whiskey, he's never shown it. (2058)" Tyrone's contempt for his oldest son is another way in which he attempts to take focus off himself, as it comes directly after his comments of "the poorhouse." At this direct attack on his brother, Edmund threatens to leave if the topic continues (2058). Tyrone placates him, and offers a change in subject, "God knows, I don't like the subject either. Will you join me in a drink? (2058)" This is a direct reaction to Tyrone's loneliness, he wishes for company to set aside his inner loneliness, and offers his main weapon of the battle, whiskey.
