Huck Finn

One writer for the San Francisco Chronicle felt that banning the book was absurd and thought "Huck Finn" was "a remarkably careful sketch of life along the Mississippi River," That writer considered the dialect, which was highly scrutinized, as a carefully managed art form. Today most people regard Twain's use of dialect, instead of proper English, as a revolutionary literary technique.
By 1905, Mark Twain's new literary style was widely accepted and no longer regarded as crude and inelegant. The Brooklyn Library now considered the book to be a bad example for children. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, along with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, was removed from the children's section of the Brooklyn Library, "I wrote "Tom Sawyer" and "Huck Finn" for adults exclusively, and it always distressed me when I find that boys and girls have been allowed to access to them," ("Tom Sawyer" and "Huck Finn") Twain's books are accused of setting a bad example for youths even today. In October of 1996 when a 9th grader student in California stole money from his parents to fly to Hawaii, the parents said that the boy's hero was Tom Sawyer and the blamed the book for his actions.
An ongoing topic in the media today is who is a positive role model for children. Television and movies are often criticized for the negative image that they portray to the youths of today. While Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer partake in many activities, such as smoking tobacco and stealing, which aren't acceptable actions for kids in today's society; that is no reason to ban a book. Most kids aren't that impressionable that they will mimic every aspect of a character's lifestyle, and if they are then parents should teach them what their acceptable actions should be. Despite Huck's uncivilized behavior, he has a good conscience that could teach a lot of kids, and parents, about how to treat others.
When the Civil Rights Movement began in the 1950's and 1960's, "Huck Finn" began to be viewed in a different light.
