Jane greatly liked the idea that her going to school , would get her away from Gateshead. Mr. Brockelhurst said that Lowood is a school were humility is a Christian grace peculiarly appropriate. He also said that consistency is very important in Lowood. Plain fare, simple attire, unsophisticated accommodations, hardy and active habits play an important role in the school . Lowood is really a charity school maintained for female orphans, which means that the Reeds had paid nearly nothing to put Jane there. The girls are underfed, overworked, and forced to sit still during seemingly endless sermons. However , Jane's experiences of Lowood are not all bad. She befriended Helen Burns , a person who became quite close to her and in a certain way played an important role on her life. She had the opportunity to excel in many studies , particularly at French. She spent six years as a pupil and two years as a teacher. After Mr. Brocklehurts left, the school became a truly useful and noble institution. Hence , life wasn't all that bad and Jane's experiences although difficult at times weren't always all negative.
             3. " An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." " Turn the other cheek and do good to them that hate you." How do these two philosophies of life match the characters of Jane Eyre and Helen Burns? " Turn the other cheek and do good to them that hate you" is a philosophy that applies to Helen Burns. Helen tells Jane that she practices a doctrine of Christian endurance, which means loving her enemies and accepting her privation. Jane disagrees strongly with such meek tolerance of injustice. Jane doesn't see how a person could be nice to people that treat her with hate and disrespect. The philosophy that applies to Jane is that of " an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." This means that Jane would rather do to others, as others do to her. As Jane herself declared "when we are struck at without a reason, we should strike back again very hard so as to teach the person who struck us never to do it again.
