Genetically Modified Foods

Two-thirds of the food on the supermarket shelves are genetically modified in some way and one-fourth of American crops are genetically modified. There are many undeniable reasons why genetically engineered foods should be labelled.
Labelling of GM foods will protect people who have allergies to certain foods. Because of the lack of labelling such people are at risk of accidentally consuming foods that contain allergens. Without labelling there is no way to protect such consumers from these hidden allergens. Some allergies aren't simply a matter of slight discomfort; they can potentially result in life-threatening anaphylactic shock ultimately resulting in death if no treatment if available.
Labelling will also assist people who have religious or other ethical problems with GM foods, for example vegetarians may not want to eat a tomato which has been engineered to include flounder genes, but with the current lack of labelling they have no way of knowing if they are eating hidden animal products.
Many people are wary of genetically modified foods as they pose as threats to our natural environment and habitat for many species of life. It has been scientifically proven that genetically modified corn is harmful to the Monarch butterfly and may ultimately wide out the entire species. With the extinction of species this may affect the biodiversity of certain habitats and environments.
Genetically modified plants and animals bred for human consumption also pose as a risk to not only to the environment but also to other species of the same life form. For example the genetically modified salmon that is designed to grow four times faster than the average salmon. If this fish was to escape or be accidentally released into the wild it could never be recaptured. Once released it would breed with other fish and devastate the existing natural balance with its modified body and behaviour, thus destroying the ecology of other under water life.
