Space Race

Leaders used it to impress their people and to better their enemies.
I also think that the recruitment of scientists like Von Braun was an important factor. Their knowledge and expertise enabled development to take place at a quicker rate.
The above two factors led to the ISS, as they were what started the ball rolling. These factors resulted in the development of space technology, which eventually reached such a state that the ISS was possible. The Cold War also led to the ISS as in my opinion the Space Station was used as a peace offering between the two nations. It demonstrated the new-found unity between Russia and America. If the two nations had not been at war' the idea of an International' Space Station may never have been necessary.
             1961 - 1986.
It was during this period of time when funding for space related research increased. Large companies could invest tax-free and thousands of new jobs were made. In October 1962 the Cuban Missile Crisis took place. This brought tension between Russia and America to its highest point. Once again the space programme was used to gain public support at a time of great tension.
On the 20th of July 1969 the American Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon. Armstrong's words at the time could not have been more true. It was a giant leap for mankind. This extraordinary achievement excited and fascinated the American public and much of the World. I would also imagine that it was success like this that drove the American government and scientists to achieve even greater things.
During the early 1970's the Space Race died down somewhat as people grew bored with it. However, during the Vietnam War President Nixon continued the space programme, mainly for the sake of national prestige. Despite the lack of public interest major developments were still taking place. In 1970 cosmonauts from Soyuz 9 landed after a record 17 days in space. This demonstrated the Russians' ability to keep men in space for large lengths of time.
