The novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, tells a tale of two friends, George Milton and Lennie Small, who wander the country during the Depression. Lennie is mentally retarded and doesn't know his own strength is causing problems for George. George is like a father to Lennie, whenever Lennie is in trouble George is always there for him. Pg.14 "Because I got you to look after me" They dream of one day owning their own little farm.
On their way to work at a ranch, they spend the night by the Salinas River. Lennie likes to pet small, furry animals, like mice and rabbits. Unfortunately, he usually ends up killing them because he pets them too hard. He accidentally kills the mouse in his pocket, and George makes him throw it across the river. Lennie cried like a kid and was mad at George for throwing the mice away. When George went off to look for some woods to make a camp fire, Lennie jump in the river and look for the mice without George knowing. Before they fall asleep, George tells Lennie to return to the river if anything bad happens.
Lennie always listen to George no matter what, and he's the only person he listen to. The next morning they arrive at the ranch. Curley, the boss's son, comes into the bunkhouse looking for his flirtatious wife. That moment when George saw her, he knew right away that Curley's wife would start some trouble with Lennie. George being a father and a brother to Lennie and told him to stay away from her when she comes near.
One day, Curley's wife stops by the barn and saw Lennie all by himself and starts talking to him. She suggests that he stroke her hair, Lennie couldn't resist it because her hair look so soft, but when he starts stroking it too hard, she pulls away and cries out, Lennie knows that if George hear her screaming and see him with her, he"ll get in trouble, so Lennie puts his hand over her mouth so no one can hear her scarem and breaks her neck by mistake.
