If this argument were a beautiful young lady, my roommates and I would consider her to be suffering from the Barbie Syndrome - Nice exterior, hollow interior. The Teleology suffers from this illness mainly because it is an inductive argument. This is an argument in which the premises provide reasons supporting the probable truth of the conclusion. In an inductive argument, the premises are intended only to be so strong that, if they are true, then it is unlikely that the conclusion is false. This line of reasoning however offers a very weak stance on the all-important question of the existence of God. .
On the surface it may be easy to compare the universe to a clock or God to a 2003 Jaguar Sedan, yet, the logic of drawing a conclusive decision simply because they both show intricate moving parts and seem to serve a purpose offers feeble support, particularly in structuring a prima facie case for the existence of God. David Hume adequately states why this is the circumstance when he said, "From watching a hair grow, can we infer how people grow?" Mr. Paley and other Teleology theist would have one believe that having an understanding of an ant gives us a sufficient picture of the universe. .
Yet, if this were the only objection Teleology would fair rather well. However, probably the greatest misleading notion of the Teleology argument is that it does not offer a premise to uphold the nature of God coming into existence. Surely, the creator of the universe is greater then a watch, a car, and even His own universe. This being the case then is not this almighty creator a highly complex being with intricate moving parts. Who then is his intelligent designer? This thought pattern of God having an intelligent designer could go on indefinitely and never offering a final solution to who is the ultimate designer.
