Marie Antoinette The Last Queen Of France. The book started with the history of Marie Antoinettes family. She had a very traditional family, where her mother was queen of Bohemia and Hungary. Marie's mother was a very strong ruler, and arranged her children's marriages for political reasons. Her mother arranged her wedding at the age of fourteen, however she didn't know what her husband to be would look like until she saw a picture of him.
From such a young age she was thrown into the fame and fortune of being a ruler. She was never very political herself, however she fell in love with all of the attention that she got. For example the book described her elabrent wedding, and the luxurious life in Versilles. On the surface Marie loved all of the glamour, but underneath she didn't understand or have much patience for all of protocol that took place everyday in her life. The book also describes the loveless marriage that she had with Louis XVI. She had very little in common with her husband, and she had a power hungry mother that watched her every move. The only thing that got her out of her depression was bring around the common people that treated her as if they loved her. This made her forget about the lack of love in her marriage.
The book explored what it was like for Marie to grow up as a teenager in a world for which she wasn't prepared. So much was expected of her that everyday brought her new struggles trying to be the wife and daughter her husband and mother wanted her to be. At age 20 she became queen in a fabulous ceremony once again the book revealed how on the surface Marie loved playing the part of royalty, but underneath she resented all the demands on her. An example of Maries struggle was shown in the book that described the many mistakes she made by trying to be something she's not. When her husband became king they"re relationship drifted further apart.
