Affimitive action

The recent ruling made by Justice Clarence Thomas has sent a shock through many colleges and have opened numerous people to another issue surrounding admission principals. Along with the affirmative action claim came an idea that colleges need to have a more equal and fair selection process for their applicants. Congressmen believe that the best way to create this equal process is to do away with the legacy applicants. Opposed to this idea is the president's of such schools where their acceptance rate for children of alumni almost doubles that of their acceptance rate of minorities. This issue is aimed at private schools where they feel that their main source of funds has to come from the alumni who donate every year. The many people opposed to this proposal believe that if the children of the alumni are not accepted than the alumni will be more reluctant to donate the much-needed funds. .
The defense against setting a quota for legacy applicants is that the funding for their institution will decline severely. The schools that deal with legacy applicants the most are that of private schools, where their only source of funding comes from alumni not the state unlike most schools. If private institutions were to not accept as many legacy applicants and more of minority applicants than their prestigious name might begin to loose value. Ivy league colleges like Yale, Harvard, and Princeton have a trend where almost 40% or their accepted applicants are alumni children. With this statistic it would be almost impossible for those schools to be able to set a quota. It might be just a coincidence but only those who apply to those schools either are athletes or legacy children, which means the students that apply are either getting a scholarship or their parents are supplying the expensive funds for their children to follow in their footsteps. With a quota many students would not be accepted thus cutting off future funds by their parents and also by the students future children.
