It is amazing how in someway we all have prejudices against the so called "modern age". In our twisted little minds nothing is as golden and shinny and perfect as it was in the "good old days". We don't cultivate any family values or keep lifelong friendships anymore We don't study as much as we should, we don't learn Latin in school, we read a lot less and we don't know our neighbors. We don't do anything of the valuable things our grandparents did. I wonder why that approach should be different towards art.
Classical music, Renaissance paintings, Barroc sculpture: that is true art. Calling the pop art movement art is a blasphemy Thinking that in the nineteenth century people were more educated than today is a huge mistake, because having access to culture back then was a privilege of the nobility only. Today, however, people are very much exposed to culture despite of their social class. There's museums everywhere, huge libraries, cyber cafes in every corner you turn. .
Someone might say that we"re choosing quantity over quality. Well, I disagree big time. What happened is that since the methods of printing became better and cheaper art has become a very profitable business. And we know that people want to make money. Art now is just another way for people to achieve that goal. Singers, above all.
Here we face a very delicate and controversial issue. It's not that pop music is losing quality, but there are people who will buy and like a certain kind of pop music. Therefore pop music is nothing but a formula that works well these days. You don't need much talent to be a popstar. There are tools that can be used to improve whatever you sing. In a way, those who are popstars and do have some talent suffer an immense prejudice. Poor babies.
