Ohrid is a city in the Republic of Macedonia with roughly two and a half millennium old sites. The Ohrid story is a millennium long story. The Monastery of St. Clement-St. Pantelejmon begins from the eleventh century. The Monastery was built in an architectural form popular at the time of St. Clement and Naum and in twelfth century was renovated. The Monastery is filled with icons, paintings, and candles. The oldest paintings in St. Clement are the work of several unknown fresco painters. The painting which had first appeared in monastic circles in the East had been adopted and nurtured in the Constantinopolitan workshops.
The monastery of St. Naum is one of the oldest historical places in Ohrid. St. Naum of Ohrid built the original monastery, gifted in the year 900. St. Naum Monastery was the first Slavonic monument of religious architecture in the Ohrid region. The monastery is filled with frescoes, icons, manuscripts, and many other pieces of old art. The most of the icons and arts are painted in different colors: golden, violet and yellow tones, the silver frames and details are later additions.
The Lake Ohrid began its life even before man's appearance, came into being about four million years ago. In its blue waters there is a plant and animal kingdom known today only through fossils. The Lake lies in a basin surrounded on all sides by mountains with peaks of over 2000 meters. It covers an area of 358 square kilometers, 30 km long, and its width varies from a maximum of 14.5 km. The rare clarity of the water in Lake Ohrid may reach down to a depth of 22 meters, and illuminate by the Sun at any time of the year.
