Elvis Aaron Presely

On January 8, 1935, two people that feel in love changed the world. Gladys Love Smith and Vernon Elvis Presley were married in June of 1933. Two years later they were not only going to have their first child they were going to be blessed with twins! It all happened in Tupelo, Mississippi in a two-room house on January 8, 1935, when Gladys gave birth to her identical twins. Devastated Gladys went through nine months of carrying her children and the first baby born, Elvis Aaron Presley, was luckily healthy as an ox and sadly the second baby born, Jessie Garon Presely, was a stillborn. Gladys, Vernon and little Elvis grew up in a working class family, moving from house to house throughout Tupelo. At eleven years old Elvis begged his parents for a bicycle that was too expensive for the family budget. His mother convinced him into accepting a guitar that cost $12.95. Luckily for the world Elvis became obsessed with his guitar and began to become serious about music. In the year 1953, Elvis graduated from high school. That year he became passionate about becoming an artist so he dropped off a demo at the Memphis Recording Service with the songs, "My Happiness," and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin," for the cost of about four dollars. Unfortunately, that was not his big break, but things turned around for him in 1954 when his second demo landed in the hands of Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Studios. Sam teamed Elvis up with some local musicians, Scotty Moore and Bill Black. The group started playing at small clubs and landed a great one-time opportunity to play at the Grand Ole Opry but unfortunately the group did not perform to their expectations. One of the Opry officials actually told Elvis to go back to truck driving. Elvis, Scotty and Bill did not let that get them down, they continued to record and travel. At the age of nineteen he appeared on a live Saturday night country music radio show and in November Elvis signed a one year contract for fifty-two Saturday night appearances.
