The bomber was able to go through the gates of the military hospital then detonated the explosives at about 7 p.m. (1500 GMT), on August 3, 2003. It was not positive how many people were killed and how many were injured. There were many reports, and the reports were conflicting saying as many as 35 had been killed. The emergency Situations Minister Boris Dzgoyev told the Associated Press that 27 people were dead and 76 injured. Many of the injured were soldiers recovering from wounds sustained in Chechnya.
Another bombing in September was blamed on Chechen terrorists also. On September 14, 2003, a suicide bomber detonated a truck loaded with nearly a ton of explosives at a key Russian government building in the southern Russian region of Ingushetia. At least two people were killed in addition to himself and wounding 29. The driver of the truck crashed through a series of barricades outside the building just before noon (5 a.m. ET), the driver came within about 15 meters (yards) of the building before then off the blast. The country has been on high alert and feared rebels would try to disrupt elections for a Chechen president, which are scheduled for October 5.

When the news of his arrest got out the market began to slip, starting with the ruble, which fell half a percent to 30.0750 against the U.S. dollar before Central Bank spent at least $500 million to support the currency. Russia's leading stock exchange Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange Index (MICEX) slid 14 percent at the open. Yukos crashed more than 20 percent on the MICEX and 19.
