It shows how he is caught up in his own pride and it doesn't matter who gets hurt in the process as long as he gets his way. That it shall be his way or no way at all and everyone else will pay the consequences. Achilles shows no compassion towards the fact that thousands of innocent Achaeans will perish in the battle because of his self-pride. Achilles selfishness will reappear later on when Agamemnon realizes he can't win this battle without Achilles. So Agamemnon sends out Phoenix, Odysseus and Aias to tell Achilles that he apologizes to him and will offer him many things including giving back Briseis if he returns to fight in this war. Achilles stubbornly turns down the apology and the many other things. Odysseus and Aias bring up the point he owes it to the rest of the Achaean soldiers to save countless lives. Phoenix who was like a father to Achilles also tries to convince him to join the battle. Phoenix states how he raised him from day one and how Achilles is so willingly to let him die in this battle after everything he has done for Achilles. Achilles still refuses their offers. The best he can do is offer Phoenix a bed to sleep in and also gives him the offer to return back home with him the next day. Lastly Achilles proves himself to be no better than a savage. He proves himself to be a savage first when he refuses to return Hector's body to his parents, and then proceeds to drag it behind his carriage by the ankles. He doesn't drag the body for a short while, but Achilles makes laps around the gates of Troy. Achilles deliberate mutilation of Hector's body shows the reader that he is not much of a compassionate or honorable man.
Before the war began it was prophesized that Troy would eventually fall at the hands of the Greeks. The war could have been prevented if Paris had returned Menelaus' wife Helen or fight Menelaus in fair duel. This solution did not occur and Troy's fate was sealed and Hector was forced to decide on his family's well being or fighting for glory and his people.
