Essays are pointless, in the highest sense of the word. They are completely without meaningful purpose. Nothing new is learned or introduced through an essay, nothing is gained by writing 3-5 pages of what mostly consists of utter bullshit, and nothing is accomplished by wasting hours of our childhood laboring away, both at the keyboard and on paper, to produce what people have come to term: an "Essay." If one was to look up the definition of the word "essay" then what one would find is: a: an analytic or interpretative literary composition usually dealing with its subject from a limited or personal point of view b: something resembling such a composition. In layman's terms: someone's written point of view on a given subject. This has been transformed by the school systems into a method of evaluating and grading students, simply on their opinions. If one were to get technical on the subject, one would find that this is, in all actuality, violating the American bill of rights. The first amendment clearly states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech- The freedom of speech includes the freedom of opinion, and therefore, grading students on papers containing their opinions, is totally and completely unconstitutional. .
Unconstitutionality ignored, the entire system of the actual grading of these opinions is even more moronic. A student hands in a paper containing his opinion on a topic assigned by his or her teacher, pours hours upon hours of precious time, effort and mental strain into an essay of 3-5 pages, hands it in on a date assigned by said teacher, and then waits for days to receive his graded opinion back. First of all, how does this teacher know that all of his/her students even have opinions about this topic they assign? They don't, they simply assume so. Secondly, why is there a specific length allowed for one's opinion? Someone might have very little to say about a topic, while someone else might want to write an entire book on the subject.
