Wise Use Rhetoric Analyzed by

To understand the leadership effects of Wise Use supporters one must understand the background of the movement itself. Wise Use considers itself a "grass roots" organization. This is true in the fact that Wise Use supporters are usually loggers, fishermen, and farmers, which makes the organization look as if it were in the interest of the every day American. The truth is that big business and corporations pump millions of dollars each year into these "grass roots" movements because they will gain much more if the pleas of the normal person are heard. With this in mind, I will introduce some of the supporters of Wise Use. Many congressmen and senators are affected by the big dollar businesses that help Wise Use to succeed. You really have to ask yourself if they believe that not worrying about environmental issues is their stance or if there is simply because they represent the people who rely on using the earth to make money. Another question is posed by looking at how much money certain corporations donate to these people for their campaigns. Judith Hendry points out Rush Limbaugh as a Wise Use supporter in the supplemental reading packet. Is Limbaugh really a person who gives no regard to the environment, or is his partisanship really that bad? Rush Limbaugh by the way is a very conservative republican who hosts a political talk show. Ronald Reagan and most of his presidential staff are also referenced by Hendry as Wise User's. Even today environmentalists are now wondering about the our current presidents agenda when it comes to conservation. Michael Furtman, talking about President George W. Bush, said that "The selections he has made to lead the country's most important resource agencies makes one wonder if we don't have a wise-use White House. The naming of his cabinet level positions - doesn't bode well for those of us who value a clean environment or progressive conservation.
