Critique of Tina Modotti

In this critique I will use a photo from Tina Modotti as primary source material. In addition to presenting a general overview of the document and a critical analysis of the content as well as the in a historical context, I will also compare this photo with other source material to analyze the author's motives and goals. Finally, I will discuss how the photo reflects on the nature of the Mexican revolution in terms of nation building and neocolonialism. .
Modotti's photo is entitled "the Bandolier, Corn, Guitar."" Artistically, it consists of three items arranged on top of each other. One item is a string of bullets, the second is an ear of corn and the third is a section of frets from a bandolier. The photograph is a gelatin silver print made in 1927. This date is significant in the photographer's life for it is the year that she joined the Mexican Communist party. As a revolutionary herself, she became more idealistic and committed to revolutionary art and politics. She also became involved with a Mexican Revolutionary named Zavier Guerrerro who influenced her to use her art for the revolutionary cause. Thus, one of Tina Mendotti's goals was that " [S]he used her camera to portray social injustice, photographing workers, political rallies and the poor ."" .
In my opinion the items in the photo represent icons of the Mexican revolution. Clearly, the bullets are an obvious and overt symbol of the revolutionary movement. The Mexican revolution claimed more than a million lives as well as causing the destruction of the agrarian, mining and ranching economies. The corn stands for the importance of and struggle for the land by the Mexican peoples. Land reform was a main reappearing theme throughout the revolution. According to Burns and Charlip, "[b]asic to the revolution was land reform. If carried out successfully, it threatened to destroy the hacienda, perhaps the most debilitating and influential institution from the past, and substitute for it communal and small private holdings.
