Leonardo Da Vinci remains today one of the most popular of the Renaissance artists. He is not only famous for his inventions and drawings, but for is mastery of art as well. His masterpieces of the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper remain to one of the most popular paintings. Because of Da Vinci's wide range of talents (he was a painter, sculptor, architect, musician, engineer and scientist), he is considered one of the most intriguing personalities in the history of Western art. .
Leonardo was born on April 15th, 1452 in Anchiano, Italy. He lived there for five years until he was sent to live with his Grandfather in the town of Vinci. There he went to school, learning to read and write along with mathematics and Latin. Da Vinci felt he did not learn enough Latin at school; therefore he tied to improve his knowledge in Latin on his own. At the age of fourteen, Leonardo moved to Florence where he began an apprenticeship in the workshop of Verrocchio. At the time Leonardo moved to Florence, Verrocchio was the most gifted artist in Florence. There is no doubt in historians" minds that Verrocchio had a rather large impact on the life of Leonardo. Between 1466 and 1472, there are no records of any painting from Leonardo because during this time, he had started his apprenticeship and was only learning basics (mixing colors etc.). During this time, Leonardo worked only on simple parts of paintings and taught himself to paint with oils. In 1472, Leonardo joined the Painters Guild of Florence. This is the official end of Leonardo's apprenticeship, although he didn't leave to workshop right away.
Around 1473, the first works of Leonardo are recorded starting with a pen-and-ink drawing of the Arnovalley. In 1476, an anonymous individual made the public accusation that he had seen Leonardo partake in an act of homosexuality. This raised questions with historians on the sexuality of Da Vinci.
