THe Joy Luck Club

.
In my opinion, the film as a whole is very consistent with the novel; nonetheless, it does not trace all images and symbols consistently and weakens some remarks by placing them out of context. For example, an early comment by Suyuan Woo's daughter that seems to be out of context is when she announces that she will sit at the East corner of the mah-jong table, "where things begin-(Tan 22). While the reader recognizes this phrase, the unwary viewer does not know that these are the words spoken by Suyuan herself. This may cause the viewer to overlook the subconscious relationship and influence from mother to daughter that powerfully contrasts with the obvious disagreement between them. On the other hand, a swan feather introduces both novel and film. The image of the swan feather reappears throughout the entire film. This signifies the mother's hopes for a new life according to the "American Dream- and simultaneously the rude awakening in which they receive upon their arrival in the United States. Unlike the book, which in later chapters barely alludes to the swan story when June's great-aunt calls her nephew Suyuan Yen, Little Wild Goose, the film noticeably returns to the swan symbol when June's father hands her the long-kept feather. Although the symbol loses part of its beauty when June's father explicitly spells out its meaning to his daughter, the recurrence of the swan image lends closure to the plot. .
The book and the film have slight similarities and differences throughout. Some ideas and images are much more dramatic in the film compared to the book. The Woo's left for America to build a better life. Suyuan Woo wanted to have a daughter much like herself, but hoped that no one would look down upon her. It was also very important that her daughter speak perfect English and hopefully not share in the same hardships that she had known. The movie brought this concept out very vividly.
