Causes Of The Tragic Results In The Story "A Lamp At Noon".
Lack of understanding and communication can often lead to tragic results regarding the people who possess these qualities. In the short story "A Lamp at noon", by Sinclair Ross, tragic results of a young couple's conflict which is based on a lack of empathy and understanding, also a lack of communication under the influence of an isolating environment is suggested by the author. .
.
The tragic results of the young couple's conflict in the story can be attributed to several factors. For instance, the couple lacks empathy and understanding for each other. This can be concluded when the mother says "And while we"re waiting Paul! Think of me and him. It's not fair. We have our lives, too, to live". A possible cause of the couple's conflict is their huge background differences. For example, the mother comes from a very rich family while the father comes from a fairly poor family. The mother does not know what living poor is like, therefore she regrets coming to the desert with her husband and wants to go back and live with her father. Even though living with the wife's father promises a better future, the father does not like the idea because he is an independent person. A father's role in a family is to support and work hard, by leaching of the wife's father, the dad would feel poorer and less respected by his own family members. The couple shows a lack of understanding as well as lack of communication due to the fact that they would always fight over the same reason. .
Another factor that can be related to the cause of the young couple's conflict in the story is lack of communication. The father is always outside working in field because he wants to avoid fighting with the mother. This can be concluded when the father says "And keep on like this? You start before I"m through the door. Week in and week out I've troubles enough on my own".
