From the beginning of Christianity until the present day Christianity has been challenged in many ways, by different groups and people. Through movements and doctrine, the Catholic Church had stood its ground debating issues from political and social reform. .
The church was the leader of the world. It told the people had to live their lives, what to believe, and how to think. It kept a strong hold on the people, if someone stepped out of line and spoke out against the church they were killed and the people backed the church in all of it's ideas and decisions. If it was not for people such as Luther and Calvin the Catholic Church may have never changed. Movements and reformations challenged the church for many years.
The break between the east and the west showed that the church was not invisible. It showed the people that the church could break down just like any thing could. That break came in the form of the Great schism. The church always had two sides united under one common hold, God. It was not until the pope in the west and the patriarch of Constantinople, in the east excommunicated each other, did the divide happen. The break came because of the political reason, and differences in life style the each side had. The east spoke Latin and the west was a Greek speaking society. Each side did not care about the other, no one tried to learn the others language, or understand their readings. It was truly the issues that they cared about the divided the church. This division of the church was a political break changing the church forever. .
Many movements through time were against the church. The church was a strong hold for the people of the world. It was a way of life, it was not until the English reformation that society got rid of the church in England. It was a movement that challenged the church, there was nothing that the pope could do. .
The reformation came from the dissatisfaction of christen humanism in the church.
