zero tolerance for violence

Zero tolerance does not allow teens to act like teens but more like adults. Many argue zero tolerance is stealing the childhood of many students all over North America. .
The rule lacks a very important value, common sense. Zero tolerance allows for no leeway in schools. If a student is caught with a toy gun he will be treated as if he/she had a loaded rifle. Or if a student is caught giving another student Advil he/she will be accused of drug trafficking and will most likely be expelled from school. All offenses are treated the same no matter how serious. This puts students at a very serious risk because it is so easy for them to break the school's policies. A perfect example of the zero tolerance rule treating all cases identical happened in Pennsylvania when a student was expelled for having a butter knife in her backpack. She had accidentally dropped the knife into her bag the night before and brought it to school the next day. Although she had no intent to use the dull butter knife as a weapon she was still treated as if she had brought a weapon and intended to hurt somebody. The suspensions and expulsions have a great deal of affect on a student. Not only is the student kicked out of school forcing him/her to miss class and fall behind it also affects a student's capability to get into university or college because they look at the students record.
On April 20th, 1999 in Littleton, Colorado two students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris walked into Columbine High School and killed over 20 students and teachers. After this tragedy many schools across the world began to develop the zero tolerance policy. Brenda Melton, a school counselor stated in an interview "I see that what we are experiencing in the schools is a hysteria as a result of the number of violent episodes within the last two years, particularly Columbine." The zero tolerance rule was created out of fear of something like this happening again; many people believe this law to be too strict and that schools are actually the safest place for children to be.
