Hoop Dreams is about two African-American kids that are growing up in the .
At least that what it seems to be at first before the .
everyday issues came into play, family, money, and drugs. With the film crew with the .
two family's, especially Arthur's, you began to see more things to the movie than just .
basketball. You also get to see how the boys begin to change and their views about life .
and basketball change.
The issue dealing with most of the problems Arthur's family had was that they .
had no money. At one point they had to use candles for light because they didn't have .
enough money to pay the electric bill . They said after that happened they began to .
appreciate everything they did have. Also when Arthur was a freshman at St. Joseph's .
his family could afford the cost of his education. Although William had the same .
problem he turned out to be a star and the happen to find him a scholarship to stay at St. .
Joe's. The other thing money holds power over is going to college. Arthur and William .
both have to get full ride scholarships to be able to afford it. The thing that's holding .
them back is the test score or passing summer school. After Arthur graduated his fourth .
summer school he was able to graduate. He went through with it. William on the other .
hand had to get a better score on the tests he has to take to round him up to eighteen .
which is Market's minimal score to be able to be accepted.
Another big issue was success and the expectations each boy had about himself, .
family, and teammates. Also to success in life in general. William was definitely be the .
most successful at first, and he was, until he hurt his knee in practice and had to have .
surgery. After his first surgery I thought he was going to be healthy and ok again but he .
was too eager and went in before he should have. He had another surgery which was .
taking the cartilage out of his knee so it wouldn't be stiff. Both times he went through .
