Utopia

It is now that we are introduced to Moore's friend, Peter Giles. In front of the church Peter introduces Moore to a well-traveled sailor named Raphael Hythloday. All three of them move to a garden where Raphael begins to criticize the policies and laws of their countries. He talks about many other countries and their policies as well. More and Giles question him as to why with all of his wisdom, did he not work for the King. Raphael's response was that his services would by unappreciated. He also felt that a king possessed different goals than he had. Raphael goes on to tell the pair of his experience in England with a British lawyer and how they had got into a debate about the punishment of thieves. Raphael also complains about the laziness of many English noblemen. With all these criticisms More and Giles still couldn't understand why Raphael wouldn't try to help society by going into politics. Raphael's response was that as long as society is governed by money a nation could never be happy. More and Giles have trouble believing that such a world could possibly exist. This is the point where Raphael introduces us to the island of Utopia. More and Giles plead for Raphael to give them a description of the island. The threesome takes a break for dinner and then reconvenes in the same location to engage in more talk of this mysterious island.
Book II begins with Raphael's physical description of the island. He goes on to say everyone in Utopia works in agriculture. Every citizen works six out of the twenty-four hours each day. This was to allow everyone enough time to develop their minds. He tells us that everything in this society is free because gold has no value. Food was distributed evenly on the island. He describes how the population dines together in communal halls. Raphael talks about the fact that women are prohibited from being married before they are eighteen and men before they are twenty-two.
